Nike has announced a new marketing campaign with a very controversial (former) athlete at the center, Colin Kaepernick.
That’s right Nike has signed the former 49ers quarterback to a multimillion-dollar deal that is equal to and a little bit greater than most of Nike’s current top athlete signees. The backlash from this decision has been swift and harsh with several people setting fire to their personal Nike gear; also cutting the Nike logo off of socks and other personal items. Kaepernick is featured on an image with the caption stating, “Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything.” While this slogan has the potential to be powerful it, unfortunately, holds the face of many people’s public enemy number 1.
One particular writer, Clay Travis, a national sports host for Fox Sports Radio, and panelist on the FS1 television show “Lock It In” believes Nike is sacrificing its main beliefs by signing Kaepernick to this deal. Travis had this to say in his article featured on USA Today, ‘Why I’m Boycotting Nike: Get Woke Go Broke’ “Whereas in the past Nike signed and paid the best athletes in their sports — Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Andre Agassi, Bo Jackson, Serena Williams — now the company is signing a former athlete who is infamous for his politics.” While his opinions in this article may be drastic he does make a fair point. Nike has always signed the best of the best when it came to their sport but now they have come to a mediocre quarterback that would still struggle to lead a team to the playoffs, and given him the same amount of money as they pay some of the most dominating athletes in the world. Nike has made a decision that could ruin a lot of relationships. Nike has several deals with players and even the entire NFL that generates them hundreds of millions of dollars, with this new deal with Kaepernick, who is someone the NFL does not want to be associated with, nothing is stopping the NFL or any of its athletes from revoking their Nike deals. It could have absolutely nothing to do with how these athletes stand on the issue as a whole, but now that this has happened any and all athletes, teams, or organizations that stand with Nike will be instantly demonetized by several millions of Americans. Nike is going to go through a severe drop in product sales and could lose several top athletes that refuse to be associated with this current decision.
