If you haven’t heard what’s been buzzing in the NBA, you must live under a rock. TMZ released an audio recording of the Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, and his girlfriend who has been identified as V. Stiviano, which is considered a racist rant. The rant was allegedly fueled by an Instagram picture of V. Stiviano and Magic Johnson. [portfolio] [content-text]
First, lets go over some of the highlights of the audio:
“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people.”
“You can “sleep” with them, you can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that [Instagram] and not to bring them to my games.”
“I think the fact that you admire [Magic] — I’ve known him well, and he should be admired, and I’m just saying that it’s too bad you can’t admire him privately.”
Now that we went over some of the highlights of the audio, lets break down some facts that makes me wonder what type of mentality does Donald Sterling have. First, his girlfriend, V. Stiviano is mixed with black and Mexican. Second, his team’s 15 player roster consist of 12 black players, and his head coach, Doc Rivers is also black. Black players makes up over 75% of the NBA. Which brings me to the question: Sterling, what were you thinking?
With these stats, I’m starting to believe Donald Sterling has a slave owner mentality. Here is my reasoning; the slave owner did not respect the slave as an equal, but the slave owner did not mind making lots of money by using the slave. The Los Angeles Clippers is estimated to be worth $575 million. Slave owners would occasionally have mistresses that were not the same race, which is still pretty consistent with Sterling.
This rant by Donald Sterling have been talked about from President Obama, King James, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and all major media. If this audio is proved to be Sterling he may have dug his grave as the Clipper’s owner. The NBA has announced that there will be a press conference after they’re investigation of the Sterling tape. The issue here is that this man (Donald Sterling), holds a powerful position in the NBA. With this type of mentality it makes it hard for us to move forward as a nation. This is much bigger then Sterling; we know that there are many people in position of authority that carry his same views! That is why this is a BIG STORY. We thought that as a nation we have accomplished much, however this issue has exposed the fact that even if we are rich and famous basketball icons, we are still inferior beings in many people’s eyes and they treat us as such. Not in the open, they would not dare say it, but we are to them a slave nonetheless!
