The College World Series is the culmination of the entire College Baseball season much like March Madness 64 teams enter the tournament and one team will sit atop the throne. As the tournament has gone on 8 teams have made it all the way to the final stretch of the tournament.
They have all either hosted Regional tournaments or Super Regional tournaments. And if they haven’t they have upset several home teams. Every day for the next four days we will be dropping introductions for all the teams headed to Omaha this year and will post our last set of teams the day before the CWS begins. We will be talking about the road each team took to get to Omaha and some of the story lines some of these teams have and what this tournament would mean to certain teams. Today will be the two ACC teams still alive in the tournament, Florida State and Louisville.
Starting with the lowest ranked Cinderella story in this year’s College World Series Florida State is technically reporting in as the lows tournament ranked seed in this weekend’s events. But that definitely doesn’t mean that they are a wash to lose their first game. Florida States baseball program has had the same head coach for 40 years. Michael D. Martin Sr. is a legend in baseball he is the NCAA most winning coach regardless of sport. Mike Martin recorded his 2,000 win this year after a double header victory over Virginia Tech. To say this man is a legend would be an understatement. Not only has this man never had a losing season he has never had a season where he didn’t reach 40 wins and he secured that as his total legacy with a game one win over LSU in the, Baton Rouge Super Regional. He led his team to an eventual sweep over the hometown Tigers and is moving on to his 17th College World Series in his career. The biggest part of this story is that Mike Martin has never won the Championship. 40 years of 40+ win seasons and has never once held the trophy on the mound. Coach Martin has confirmed this will be his last season coaching baseball could he end his career with a national championship or just another loss in the College World Series. (This is one of my favorite stories this year)
Louisville was one of the teams that ranked high enough that was able to host a Regional and Super Regional. In their regional tournament they were pinned against some of the weaker competition in the tournament facing UIC and Illinois State. They took a loss to Illinois State but got back on track and destroyed Indiana and Illinois State. And the carnage didn’t stop there Louisville was the first team to punch their ticket to the CWS by sweeping Eastern Carolina in their Super Regional.
